Tips on Going and Staying Green

The Sierra Club was created by John Muir in 1892 and known to many as the founder of the green movement. It has been named the most effective environmental advocacy organization in the nation with over 625,000 members in the U.S.

Decide for yourself how green you want to be!

The following three categories are based on the level of convenience, cost and constructability of going green. Each category is broken into sub-sections that are established by the USGBC, which offers areas you might want to concentrate on. If you're concerned with saving water, refer to the Water Efficiency sub-section. If the quality of your indoor air is a concern, refer to the Indoor Environmental Quality section.

It's easy. Just pick a topic and explore the possibilities!

Everyone can be green. Pick a "shade" appropriate to what is practical and fits your lifestyle. Obviously if you are not building your dream home, it would be nearly impossible to replace your insulation with recycled denim jeans; but you could if you where adding on a fourth bedroom. On the other hand, building a second home with engineered lumber (Serious Green), doesn't keep you from donating your empty coffee cans to the Children's Museum (Light Green).

It's fun. You too can say, "We do it Green"!

Easily Green - a low budget approach with a minimum lifestyle change, something you would probably be doing anyway but with a green attitude, i.e., for apartment or house renters.

Moderately Green - a moderate approach requiring a little investment and effort, but more than just recycling and turning off lights, i.e., for home remodelers or major home upgrades.

Seriously Green - a highly motivated approach to investing in a clean, safe and healthy environment by making the largest investment in energy saving methods, and creating the best opportunity to save the most money.
